Before you break the bank, better read through this male enhancement primer to avoid being scammed by products that don’t deliver on their promises or worse, not work at all.

A – Aphrodisiac
From the Greek goddess of sexuality and love, Aphrodite, comes the word aphrodisiac, which is defined as any substance that increases sexual desire. Common aphrodisiacs are oysters, horn of rhinoceros, and tiger penis.

B – Balanitis
A condition commonly seen on boys still in diapers, balanitis refers to inflammation of the glans penis. Sometimes the foreskin may also be affected, a condition called balanoposthitis.

C – Catuaba
Used in traditional Brazilian medicine as an aphrodisiac, catuaba bark and preparations are also sold in health food stores and through online retailers as remedies for erectile dysfunction.

D – Damiana
A shrub native to Central America, damiana belongs to the family Turneraceae. Its leaves are traditionally made into a tea, which Mexican Indians drink to enhance libido and boost sexual performance.

E – Epimedium
Also known as Horny Goat Weed, Epimedium is a popular aphrodisiac, which is usually sold as a penis enhancement supplement in tablet, capsule and raw herb form. Sometimes it is blended with other herbs such as yohimbe, ginseng, and saw palmetto.

F – Foreskin
In uncircumcised men, the foreskin is a retractable fold of skin that covers the glans penis. According to the World Health Organization, “there is debate about the role of the foreskin, with possible functions including keeping the glans moist, protecting the developing penis in utero, or enhancing sexual pleasure due to the presence of nerve receptors.”

G – Ginseng
Used for the potential treatment of sexual dysfunction in men, Ginseng has been shown to enhance libido and copulatory performance. Ginseng’s components (ginsenosides) have also been proven to facilitate penile erection, a fact which is documented in Chinese and Korean medicinal pharmacopeias.

H – Heart Disease
A condition that prevents one from taking penis enlargers and similar supplements; those with heart disease are also warned against taking sildenafil (Viagra), especially if they are taking nitrates.
